Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card

The Scotiabank Gold American Express® card has long been heralded as one of the best travel credit cards in Canada. It won the Best Card with Travel Perks at our Best of Finance awards in 2018, and thanks to a recent makeover, it's now even better!

There is lots to get excited about, but let's start with the sign-up bonus. If you open a new Scotiabank Gold American Express® card account by December 30, 2019, you can get 30,000 bonus Scotia Rewards points, worth $300 in real money. All you have to do to is make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first three months (25,000 bonus points), and make at least $10,000 in purchases in the first year (5,000 bonus points). Considering the average Canadian spends $1,600 per month, or $19,200 annually, this is a very attainable target. You don't have to wait long to receive your bonus points either, with Scotiabank promising to credit your account with the initial 25,000 points just five to ten business days after your first three months has passed.

Earn Points on Everyday Purchases

Sign up bonuses are great, but what about points accrual from everyday spending? There is good news on that front too, with cardholders earning five Scotia Rewards points for every dollar spent at eligible grocery stores, restaurants, fast food outlets and bars. This includes food delivery services such as Foodora and SkipTheDishes. Cardholders also earn five Scotia Rewards points for every dollar spent on eligible entertainment purchases, including Cineplex movie theatres. You'll get three Scotia Rewards points for every dollar spent on eligible gas and daily transit, including taxis, rideshare apps and public transit (no more grumbling about the TTC). You can also earn three points for every dollar spent on eligible streaming services including Netflix. Finally, you'll earn one Scotia Rewards point for every dollar spent on just about everything else, including foreign currency transactions. This is a comprehensive rewards system, designed to complement the lifestyle and spending habits of modern Canadians, and we think they have nailed it.

As seen in the earnings table below, if your credit card spending matches that of the average Canadian, you can expect to earn over $1,200-worth of points in the first two years. Unlike some other rewards programs, you can redeem Scotia Rewards points for a huge selection of items. Your redemption choices include high-end merchandise from Apple and Best Buy, gift cards for iTunes and Amazon.ca, or even a credit towards your account balance. However, you get the best bang for your buck by putting your points towards travel through the Scotia Rewards Travel Service, and these purchases include a Best Price Guarantee on airfare.

Factor in the additional perks from being an American Express member, including Front of the Line® ticket sales, and special offers through the American Express Invites® program, and you have a deal that is extremely hard to beat.

The Ultimate Travel Credit Card

With all of the redemption options, it is easy to forget that the Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card is, at its core, a travel card. This becomes evident once you look at the travel insurance provided: cardholders receive travel emergency medical insurance (valid for up to 25 consecutive days for persons under age 65), trip cancellation, flight delay, lost baggage and lots more. This robust package would be worth over $100 if you were to purchase it separately.

This all sounds great, right? I know you are waiting to hear the catch, but there really isn't one. The annual fee is a competitive $120 per year, dwarfed by the value of rewards you can expect to earn. If you spend over $50,000 per year on this card, the five and three percent earning rates are reduced to one percent, but you will have already earned a small fortune in rewards by that point. The only downside to this card is if you already have a Scotiabank retail credit card, or have held one in the last two years, you are not eligible for the points bonus offer, but the earning rate of the Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card means it is probably worth switching anyway!

If it sounds like we are gushing, well, it's because we are. This card has an awesome sign up bonus, a generous rewards program, excellent insurance coverage and a wide-range of redemption options when it comes to claiming your reward. What more do you want? VIP airport lounge access? Well, it provides that too, so sign up today and start earning those points!

Earning Potential: $1,263.21-worth of Scotia Rewards points

In comparison to other cards, the Scotiabank Gold American Express® card earns rewards at a much faster rate. This means you could essentially purchase a round trip ticket for a premium medium-haul flight after two years (or even a long-haul if you happen to stumble across a sale!).

  • The five percent and three percent earnings rates only applies to the first $50,000 you spend on the card annually. After that, you will only earn one point per dollar spent at eligible gas stations, grocery stores, dining and entertainment.
  • You cannot earn points on cash advances, Scotia Credit Card Cheques, Scotia Rewards dollars, returns, bill payments, casinos and gambling, or annual memberships.
  • The minimum credit limit $5,000.
