RateSupermarket.ca's Review

This card is designed for anyone who plans to purchase a new vehicle within the next couple of years.

Put simply, you earn GM rewards whenever you use this credit card. These rewards convert into a cash discount off any new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac vehicle. The card does have an annual fee of $79, but is waived for the first 12 months of card membership.

While it may seem like a niche card, the amount you can save on a new car is impressive. If you spend at the same rate of the average Canadian, after two years you will save over $1,100 towards the cost of a new GM vehicle. For increased flexibility, you earn these GM rewards anywhere you shop using the card so you don't have to change your spending habits. What's more, your GM Earnings never expire so there is no deadline to redeem.

Aside from the rewards program, this card boasts a very impressive suite of travel insurance benefits. Coverage includes emergency medical travel insurance, trip interruption, flight delay, lost baggage insurance and more. If you travel a couple of times per year, this can be enough to justify the $79 annual fee.

Obviously, if you are not buying a new car in the next couple of years, this may not be the card for you. But if you like to travel and are a fan of GM automobiles, what are you waiting for? Get this card now and start saving for your next vehicle purchase!

Earning Potential: $1,108.02 in GM Earnings (discount on a new GM vehicle)

Pros

  • The annual fee is waived for first year.
  • Add an additional cardholder to your Scotiabank GM Visa Infinite Account for just $39 per year. This way, your spouse or other family member can help contribute towards the rewards.
  • Receive 5% in GM Earnings on the first $10,000 of everyday purchases, and receive 2% thereafter.
  • $1 in GM Earnings = $1 off the purchase price or lease down-payment of a new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac automobile.
  • Your earnings will not expire as long as you're a cardholder. There's no pressure to spend your rewards before you are ready.
  • There is no limit on the GM Earnings you can accrue or redeem. This flexibility means you could save a substantial amount on your next vehicle purchase.
  • No matter where in the world you are shopping, most personal items charged to this card are covered by purchase security and extended warranty.
  • Card members can save up to 25% at participating Budget and AVIS locations across the U.S. and Canada.
  • Plus, when you put the cost of a rental car on this card, you can decline the rental company's collision or loss damage waiver as you will automatically be insured against vehicle damage and theft.
  • The suite of travel insurance included with this card is also very impressive. It includes:

o Emergency medical travel insurance. This covers you, your partner and accompanying dependent children for up to $1 million each on your travels.
o Trip interruption insurance. If your travel arrangements are cancelled or changed through no fault of your own, you are covered.
o Flight delay insurance. This means you can be reimbursed for expenses incurred following a delay of four or more hours (limit of $500 per traveller).
o You are covered in the event that your bags are delayed or lost during transit.
o Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance. You, your spouse and dependent children are insured against accidental loss of life or dismemberment (up to $500,000 each when you charge at least 75% of carrier fees to this card).

Cons

  • In all honesty, the annual fee of $79 seems fair for the travel insurance package included, and for the GM Earnings you can put towards a new vehicle. However, this card is generally appealing to individuals who will buy a new GM vehicle within the next couple of years. If you don't drive, you should probably look elsewhere!
