Our Rating:
Annual Fee Interest Rate Balance Transfer Cash Advance Credit Score Good: -- I've had a credit card, or loan for 6+ years. I've had good credit for the last 7 years (no bankruptcies or no defaults on credit as a result of failing to pay debts back to creditors). I haven't opened a new credit card account, loan, or line of credit in the last nine months. I've made the minimum payments on my existing credit cards for the past three months. Rewards Are all rewards created equal? From points, to miles, to cash back – how do you know how much you’re really getting? To help you find the best rewards card, we’ve created the Your Reward Return, an estimate on the dollar value of your rewards based on your monthly spend so that you can compare like for like. RateSupermarket.ca's Review

The RBC Visa Infinite Avion® is a high-quality travel rewards option, offering 15,000 bonus points upon completion of a successful application. This is one of the best sign-up promos out there – enough for a short-haul flight to a neighbouring province or state! Even without this attractive introductory offer, the earning potential, travel benefits and insurance make it a very competitive card for those who want to save on vacations or even at the pump (you can save on gas and earn points when filling up at Petro Canada stations).

Earning Potential: Up to $385.60-worth of RBC Rewards Points

The RBC Royal Bank® Visa Infinite Avion® earns one point on the dollar, with an additional 25 per cent on some travel-related purchases. It is not the highest earning travel rewards card on the market, but points will add up quickly with regular use, and as outlined below, cardmembership does offer multiple other benefits.

Pros

  • 15,000 welcome points.
  • Earn 25% more RBC Rewards points on eligible travel-related purchases.
  • Save three cents per litre on fuel & earn 20% more Petro-Points and RBC Rewards points when you link your Petro-Points card to this credit card.
  • Extensive options for redeeming your points: book flights, hotel stays, cruises, vacation packages, car rentals on the RBC Rewards site, powered by Orbitz.
  • No blackout dates or seat restrictions when redeeming your points for travel.
  • In addition to airfare, hotels and packages, cardholders can also redeem points on merchandise and gift cards, or put them towards RBC investments, lines of credit – even mortgage payments.
  • You can also put your points toward your credit card balance with the Payback with Points program.
  • You can optionally transfer your RBC Rewards points towards other eligible loyalty programs.
  • An on-call concierge, plus discounts and offers on dining and entertainment through the Visa Infinite program.
  • Premium suite of insurances including trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel medical, car rental, lost luggage and even hotel/motel burglary insurance.
  • Cardholders receive purchase protection and extended warranty.

Cons

  • The card does have an annual fee of $120.
  • Each additional card costs $50.
  • You must have a good credit score to qualify for this card, plus a personal annual income of $60,000 or a household annual income of $100,000.
  • Cardholders must have a minimum of 1,000 points before they can redeem points for travel.
  • If you choose to redeem your points for travel (a plane ticket, for example), RBC does restrict you to a maximum ticket price, depending on how many points you have and where you want to go. If you wish to redeem points on a ticket above the maximum price, you can pay the difference using your card, or use additional points at a lower rate of return. And at least half of the required rewards points must already have been earned in order to do this. Sounds confusing? Check out the break-down here.
