RateSupermarket.ca's Review

The RBC Rewards+ Visa Card has a competitive rewards structure with no annual fee! You earn points for everything you buy, and rewards are doubled when buying groceries and pharmacy products or filling up at the gas station.

Points can be redeemed for a wide array of items from the RBC Rewards Catalogue. Options include Apple products, kitchenware, gift cards or anything from the Best Buy catalogue. You can also redeem points for flights and other travel options. You really are spoiled for choice with this card!

You don't have to bank with RBC to have this card, but it does help to unlock bonus points. If you do bank with RBC, you can very easily get a sign-up bonus of 3,500 points in the first six months of cardmembership.

All things considered, this is a very good no-fee rewards option. If you want a more lucrative rewards program, you may have to look at cards that have an annual fee.

Earning Potential: 29,810 RBC Rewards Points

So, how does this card stack up to other rewards options? We crunched the numbers using our Best of Finance methodology to see how much you could earn over a 24-month period.

Assuming $1,222.96 is spent on the card monthly, at eligible retailers in the following categories*:

Pharmacy Food Gas
$ 55.33 $ 758.53 $ 155.72**
Travel Other Monthly Total
$ 151.21 $ 102.17 $ 1,222.96

Rewards earned over a 24-month period: 29,810 RBC Rewards Points

Monetary worth: $298.10

With that number of points, why not treat a loved one to a weekend getaway? Almost 30,000 points from over two years of average spending will pay for two return flights to a neighbouring Province or State. If you would rather not redeem for travel, you can search the RBC Rewards catalogue for a product or gift card of your choice.

Pros

  • No annual fee! Start earning points without having to pay for the card.
  • Earn one point for every $1 you spend on groceries, gas, and pharmacy purchases.
  • Earn one point for every $2 you spend on everything else.
  • Primary cardholders can get 500 points for completing each of the following activities within 60 days of opening an account:

  1. Share your email address with RBC.
  2. Go paperless and sign up for eStatements.
  3. Download and sign into either the RBC Mobile or RBC Wallet app.
  4. Make an Interac e-Transfer with RBC.
  5. Transfer funds with the RBC Mobile app or RBC Online Banking.
  6. Deposit a cheque with the RBC Mobile app.
  7. Pay a bill with the RBC Mobile app or RBC Online Banking.

  • While it may seem like a lot of hoops to jump through, if you can do all of the above, you are rewarded with an additional 3,500 points.
  • In addition to flights, you also have the option to redeem your RBC Rewards Points for high-end products from companies including Apple, Bose and Cuisinart.

Cons

  • If you are motivated by earning a bunch of rewards, consider paying an annual fee and switching to a card which offers a higher rate of return.
  • If you don't bank with RBC, you can only get 1,500 bonus points rather than 3,500 points, provided you complete all the required bonus tasks within 60 days of account approval.
