RateSupermarket.ca's Review

Even in the competitive travel rewards market, the National Bank World Mastercard® packs a serious punch. What sets this card apart (and justifies the $115 annual fee) is the travel insurance it provides. Coverage includes trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or damaged baggage, rental car coverage and comprehensive emergency medical insurance. In comparison, if you were to buy an individual policy with all of these features, you would likely have to pay more than that annual fee.

This card also features a rewards program, whereby you accrue points and redeem them at the National Bank's À la carte Rewards store. The rate at which you earn points is determined by how much you spend. In all honesty, this rewards program is not the fastest-earning program out there. However, once you are ready to redeem your points, you can choose from a vast selection of products and travel options.

In a nutshell, frequent travellers will really benefit from the suite of travel insurance provided by this card. If you don't travel much, you may want to consider a cheaper card that earns rewards more quickly.

Earning Potential: 36,688 Rewards Points

So, how does this card stack up to other travel rewards options? We crunched the numbers using our Best of Finance methodology to see how much you could earn over a 24-month period.

Assuming $1,222.96 is spent on the card monthly, at eligible retailers in the following categories*:

Pharmacy Food Gas
$ 55.33 $ 758.53 $ 155.72**
Travel Other Monthly Total
$ 151.21 $ 102.17 $ 1,222.96

When you deduct the annual fee, the rewards accrued after two years of average use are modest. However, if you travel a few times per year, you can save a lot on travel insurance in this time.

Pros

  • Earn 1.25 to 2 points for every dollar you spend. If you spend between $20,001 and $30,000 annually, you get two points per dollar. If you spend more or less than that amount, you get 1.25 points per dollar. You receive the points at the end of the year once your annual spending is over.
  • You can earn points faster by adding an additional card to your account, i.e. for your spouse.
  • If you choose to redeem your points for travel using NBC's À la carte Rewards Plan, you have the freedom to choose any agency and airline you like. In addition to flights, you can book hotels, cruises, car rentals, and more on this platform.
  • Travel insurance coverage includes trip cancellation insurance up to $2,500 per person, trip interruption insurance up to $5,000 per person, flight delay insurance up to $500 per person, baggage delay insurance up to $500 per person, and baggage insurance against theft or loss up to $1,000 per person.
  • Out-of-province medical insurance up to $5 million per person.
  • Vehicle rental insurance provides you with protection against collision, theft or damage for up to 48 days (includes coverage up to $2,000 for theft of personal effects).
  • Medical, general and legal assistance included for all cardholders.
  • Purchases made on this card are protected against theft or damage for 180 days.
  • Extended warranty feature adds two years to the warranty provided by the manufacturer on certain items purchased with the card.
  • Mastercard's Zero Liability policy against fraud means that you are not liable for any unauthorized transactions.

Cons

  • The annual fee is $115 and each additional card costs $35 per year. While it is not cheap, this is a good value if you travel a lot. If you don't, you should find a card with a lower fee and better rewards potential.
  • The minimum credit limit is $5,000, which is fine as long as you don't overspend. If you have trouble spending within your means, seek out a card which has a lower credit limit.
