RateSupermarket.ca's Review

The National Bank World Elite™ Mastercard® is a very enticing travel rewards card, not due to the rate at which you accrue points, but for its extensive travel insurance coverage. The annual fee is $150 a year, but for frequent travellers, the savings it provides will outweigh this expense. Moreover, if you spend $3,000 in the first three months, the fee is waived for the first year.

The card features trip cancellation insurance, out-of-province medical, flight delay insurance, lost baggage and vehicle rental insurance. And savvy travellers also get up to $250 each year to cover common travel expenses, like airport parking and baggage fees.

If you travel frequently, this card will almost certainly save you time and money. But if you don't travel often, this is probably not the card for you. There are cheaper cards out there with similar reward-earning potential.

If you spend like the average Canadian, you could earn enough points over the course of two years to cover a short-haul return flight to Montreal or New York. Or perhaps you are tired of travelling, in which case you can redeem the points for high-end kitchenware, electronic gadgets, or countless other items from the NBC rewards store.

Pros

  • Annual fee is waived for the first year, provided you charge at least $3,000 to your card in the first three months of cardmembership. Based on the spending habits of an average Canadian, this is an attainable target.
  • If you spend between $40,001 and $80,000 over a 12-month period, from the date your account is opened, you will earn up to two points per dollar spent. If you spend more or less than this amount, you will earn 1.5 points per dollar spent.
  • Accumulate points faster by adding an additional card to your account (for your spouse to use, for example).
  • When it comes to redeeming your points, you are spoilt for choice! You can redeem for travel rewards, gift cards, brand-name items or even National Bank financial products.
  • If you choose to redeem your points with the National Bank's À la carte Rewards Plan®, you have the freedom to travel with the agency and airline of your choice.
  • It includes out-of-province medical insurance of up to $5,000,000 per person, trip cancellation insurance up to $2,500 per person and trip interruption insurance up to $5,000 per person.
  • Extra travel insurance coverage includes departure flight delay insurance up to $500 per person, baggage insurance in case of delay up to $500 per person, and baggage insurance in the event of theft or loss up to $1,000 per person.
  • Vehicle rental insurance is provided, offering protection against damage, collision or theft for up to 48 days (with theft of personal items covered up to $2,000).
  • Travellers are also eligible for a refund of up to $250 on some travel fees incurred throughout the year. These include fees for seat selection, airport parking or excess baggage fees.
  • Do you frequently travel via Montréal-Trudeau Airport? If so, you and a guest can enjoy exclusive access to the National Bank Lounge, which boasts complementary drinks, snacks, WiFi and more!
  • Cardholders also qualify for medical, general and legal assistance with this card.
  • Travel aside, this card has a good selection of purchase insurance, including purchase protection in the event of damage or theft, for 180 days. You also receive extended warranty, up to two additional years on top of the manufacturer's warranty, and with Mastercard's Zero Liability policy, you won't be held accountable for unauthorized transactions made with your card.

Cons

  • With an annual fee of $150, this card is not cheap. While the travel insurance provided is very impressive, if you do not travel a lot, you should find a cheaper card or one that accrues points faster.
  • Each additional card costs $50 per year.
  • The card has a $5,000 minimum credit limit, which is not really a con, but if you are concerned about over-spending, you should find one with a lower limit.
