RateSupermarket.ca's Review

Credit cards with no annual fee and a low balance transfer promotion generally offer little in terms of rewards. However, if used wisely, this humble card packs a serious punch!

Firstly, you receive 800 AIR MILES just for signing up*. This alone is worth $80, a pretty decent bonus for a no-fee card.

Next is the actual rewards scheme; If you shop at Sobeys3 or Foodland you receive two times the rewards miles for every $20 you spend. Otherwise, the rate is $1 for every $20 spent everywhere else4. And if you get additional cards for your spouse or family (also no fee), the miles can add up quickly. When it comes to redeeming your miles, you can choose from a wide selection of travel or merchandise.

Earning Potential: 3,431 AIR MILES

So, how does this stack up to other AIR MILES rewards cards? We crunched the numbers using our Best of Finance methodology to see how much you could earn over a 24-month period.

Assuming $1,222.96 is spent on the card monthly, at eligible retailers in the following categories*:

Pharmacy Food Gas
$ 55.33 $ 758.53 $ 155.72**
Travel Other Monthly Total
$ 151.21 $ 102.17 $ 1,222.96

Rewards earned over a 24-month period: 3,431 AIR MILES

**Based on $1.00/litre gas prices

Based on average spending habits*, you stand to earn just under 3,500 AIR MILES in two years of use. For context, this is enough to pay for a flight from Halifax to Fort Lauderdale or Montreal to Miami. If you are more interested in merchandise than travel, it's enough to get yourself a new set of headphones, a wireless speaker or another item of similar value.

  • Earn two miles for every $20 you spend at participating AIR MILES Partners, namely Sobeys and Foodland.
  • Earn one mile for every $20 spent everywhere else.
  • When shopping at eligible vendors, you can use your BMO® Sobeys AIR MILES®† MasterCard® and a regular AIR MILES Collector Card at the same time to get double the points.
  • Items bought with your card are automatically insured against theft or damage for 90 days from date of purchase.
  • Extended warranty coverage doubles the original manufacturer's warranty period up to a maximum of one additional year6.
  • Receive a discount on some car rentals.
  • For added convenience, the BMO® Sobeys AIR MILES®† MasterCard® is compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

  • It's hard to criticize a no-fee card, but it is worth noting this is not the highest earning rewards card out there. Remember though, if you are looking for a higher rate of return, you will probably have to pay an annual fee for the privilege.
