RateSupermarket.ca's Review

We've all heard of Marriott and American Express®, but what is this "Bonvoy" all about? Simply put, it is the name of Marriott's new loyalty program, which combines all of their older rewards initiatives in one place. As you might have guessed, this card is targeting loyal Marriott guests, but with impressive earning potential and lots of freebies, it is a good option for anyone who likes to travel and stay in hotels.

To prove this point, you will receive 50,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy™ points after charging $1,500 to the card within the first three months of cardmembership. This equates to three free nights at a very nice hotel! On top of this, Marriott Bonvoy™ treat all cardholders to an additional free night each year.

You earn points simply by shopping and spending money as normal. The Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card rewards you with two points per dollar spent, without restrictions on where you shop or what you buy. This reward is increased to five points per dollar spent at Marriott properties.

Based on the spending habits of the average Canadian, you can expect to earn upwards of 140,000 points in the first two years. For context, 120,000 points is enough for 12 free nights, off peak, at a Marriott "Category 2" hotel. Just 30,000 points is enough for access to a luxury suite at Old Trafford for a Manchester United match in the knockout rounds of the Champions League, and 69,000 points gets a table for two at a top New York restaurant, with tableside presentation and a personal kitchen tour from a world-renowned chef. There are many of these experiences to choose from, truly something for everyone.

If you are looking for a downside, this card does have an annual fee of $120, but this expense is dwarfed by the value of the points you can earn. It is worth noting that additional cards linked to your main account are free, meaning a spouse or family member can help contribute towards rewards.

All in all, the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card is an extremely competitive addition to the travel rewards category. The only real problem will be convincing your boss to let you have enough time off work to enjoy all of the free hotel stays!

Pros

  • New cardholders receive a welcome bonus of 50,000 points for charging $1,500 to the card within the first three months. The average Canadian spends $1,600 per month, so this is a very attainable target.
  • If you redeem your points for four nights at a hotel you can enjoy a fifth night for free.
  • You will earn five points for every dollar spent at participating Marriott Bonvoy™ properties, and two points per dollar spent everywhere else. There are no restrictions on where you can shop to earn these points.
  • You are spoiled for choice when it comes to redeeming your points. Naturally, there are tons of travel options, including free nights at over 6,500 hotels worldwide (with no blackout dates).
  • You can redeem points for air travel with a wide selection of carriers. In fact, you get an additional 15,000 point bonus when you transfer 60,000 points to a frequent flyer program.
  • If you decide not to use the points for travel or accommodation, you can redeem them for a wide selection of memorable experiences. Choose from private dining at a high-end restaurant, VIP treatment at a top-tier European soccer match or plenty of other options to suit every taste.
  • While this card does have an annual fee, additional cards are available at no extra cost. Sign up your family and their spending can contribute towards your rewards accrual.
  • As a cardholder, you receive a free night at a hotel after your anniversary each year.
  • All cardholders automatically become Silver Elite Members at Marriott hotels, meaning you earn 10% bonus points on stays, get priority late checkout and can use a dedicated phone line when making reservations.
  • If you are a big spender and manage to charge $30,000 to the card within 12 months, you get upgraded to Marriott Bonvoy™ Gold Elite status. This annual spend is out of reach for the average Canadian but hey, we can dream!
  • Oh wait, what's that? Gold Elite status can also be attained after staying 25 nights in a Marriott Bonvoy™ hotel within a calendar year. With this credit card, you are automatically credited with 15 Elite Nights, making Gold Elite status very realistic! (Gold Elite members enjoy later checkouts, room upgrades and even more bonus points than Silver Elite members).
  • If you refer a friend to this credit card and they are successfully approved, you receive a bonus of 10,000 points.
  • Being a Marriott card, you would expect it to feature a competitive suite of insurance: cardholders receive emergency travel assistance, car rental insurance, flight and baggage delay insurance, lost/stolen baggage insurance, hotel/motel burglary insurance and up to half a million dollars in travel accident insurance. While hopefully you will never need to use this, it is reassuring to have it in your back pocket when travelling.
  • This is an AMEX card and all cardholders are included in the American Express Invites® program. Key features of this program include access to advance ticket sales, front of line perks and plenty more.
  • Shop without fear! American Express® provides Buyers Assurance Protection (increases manufacturers warranty for up to one additional year) as well as Purchase Protection (automatically insuring your purchases against damage and theft for up to 90 days from the date of purchase).

Cons

  • This card does carry an annual fee of $120. While this might put off a few people, most rewards cards charge an annual fee, and most have lower earning potential than this one.
  • If work or family obligations restrict you to peak season travel, you will find the value of points reduced. Conversely, travelling on off peak dates will stretch out your rewards. For example, a "Category 2" hotel will cost you 15,000 points per night in high season and only 10,000 per night in low season.
  • While the travel insurance offered by this card is helpful, it doesn't include medical travel insurance. You will need to purchase this separately.
