You might not be thinking about scoring great deals in August. Maybe you’re spending your time outside enjoying the nice weather instead, perhaps even on a vacation at a beautiful lakeside cottage. That doesn’t mean there aren’t great deals to be had inside. From linens to seasonal clothing, here are the best things to buy in August.
Stock up on summer clothes
With the summer retail season coming to an end and stores getting more of their fall clothing in stock every day, August is a great time to get discounts on summer staples like shorts, tank tops, bathing suits, sandals and light jackets. By updating your summer wardrobe now, you can still get some use out of it this season before putting it away for next year or a winter vacation down south.
Buy outdoor seasonal merchandise
Department and hardware stores will be looking to clear out their summer stock of barbecues, patio furniture, plants and gardening equipment. If you’re in the market for a new lawnmower or other lawn care items, now is also a good time to look for deals. The discounts will ramp up in late August and early September but the earlier you shop, the more selection stores will have.
(Editor’s note: If you’re stocking up on outdoor gear, don’t forget the bug spray! This is an essential item to have if you plan on travelling to Florida or the Caribbean over the winter, but is usually hard to come by in December, January and February.)
Score a new mattress
Is there a spring that squeaks on your mattress? Has it started to sag in the middle? August is a great time to get discounts on beds at both mattress and department stores. Some stores get new models in September, meaning they have to clear out the old models first. This amounts to savings for you, the customer, since stores will likely give big discounts on those older models.
Take advantage of back-to-school sales
August starts the official back-to-school season, meaning parents everywhere will be looking to outfit their kids for the next school year. But even if you don’t have kids, August is still a great time to get discounts on pens, crayons, paper, binders or even a new laptop. By shopping now, you will beat the back-to-school crowds on the first week of September and ensure the items you need will be in stock. The deals on laptops are also some of the best you’ll see all year, but once again, shop early since the best prices tend to be found earlier in the month. You can always keep your receipt and return your purchase if the price gets cut later.
Stores compete aggressively to have the best prices on common back-to-school staples. My tip: Rather than run around to multiple stores to get the lowest prices, just go to one store, bring your phone or a printed flyer and ask them to match the prices of their competitors.
Decorate your home like a dorm
Also heading back to school: college and university students, many of whom will be outfitting a dorm room. Expect to find plenty of discounts on staples such as linens, including towels, sheets, and comforters, as well as all sorts of organizational solutions like closet organizers, storage boxes and kitchen organizers. Many of these items will be in bright and attractive colours that students love. If that’s your style, you might just find exactly what you’re looking for at a great price!
New vintages of wine are often released in September which means many wineries and liquor stores put last year’s vintages on sale in August in order to make room for new inventory. This is one of the only times of the year when you can get deep discounts on wine, so if your evening routine involves a glass of cabernet, be sure to stock up now.
Go car shopping
One of the best times to buy a vehicle is in September when manufacturers officially roll out new models for the coming year. This means dealerships have to get rid of their old stock. At the same time, car salespeople are also trying to meet their quarterly quotas and may be motivated to give you discounts. However, if you are very specific about what you want in a car, it’s better to look in August when you can still find great deals and more options are available.
Buy local produce
August is the month when you’ll find the greatest availability in local produce. Consider stocking up and freezing fresh fruits and veggies while they’re at their cheapest. Now is also the time to can, make jam and pickle veggies so that you have delicious and cheap local food year round.
According to Foodland Ontario, apples, apricots, blueberries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums and raspberries are the fruits that are currently in season. Veggies such as artichokes, beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, garlic, leeks, lettuce, onions, peas, parsnips, radishes, summer squash and tomatoes are also easy to come by at this time of year.
